THE BPP NEWSLETTER Index (1999-2009)

(Last updated on April 11, 2018)
The following is an index and cover gallery of The BPP Newsletter (later titled The Bluesletter) from 1999 to 2009. Click the cover images below to view them at larger size. (Cover scans of #1-20 are from my own copies; the rest were found online.) All issues were originally published at digest-size (5.5" x 8.5"). Issues #48-50 were only released as digital versions in PDF format. The BPP also had four BPP Specials and a jam comic (not indexed here).
The BPP (Blue Plaque Publications) was founded in 1999 by Steve Keeter and Jim Main, using the group name that had been abandoned in 1974 when the former BPP was renamed the UFO (United Fanzine Organization). Both Keeter and Main had recently returned to small-press publishing and would have applied to rejoin the UFO, but didn't care for the emphasis on rules and regulations in the UFO at that time. They revived the BPP instead and shared Chairmanship duties, taking turns on which one would publish the newsletter. This tradition continued even when Keeter and Main stepped down from leadership, with their successors being two members who would co-chair the group, with one of the chairs publishing the newsletter.
During its existence, the BPP had at least four webpages, all of which have since been taken down from the internet (although glimpses of a few can be found archived on the Wayback Machine). The first BPP site (not archived) was a page at Ian Shires' Dimestore Productions website, starting around June 2001. On August 18, 2001, Jim Main started a BPP Yahoo Group which would eventually accumulate over 9,000 posts before Main announced its closure with the demise of the BPP in May 2009. (He left it up for several months after that; the most recent posts that I could find on the BPP Yahoo Group were posted in January 2010.) Likewise, Steve Keeter's BPP site at MSN (which replaced the Dimestore BPP site in November 2001) also vanished when MSN closed their groups in February 2009. The MSN site had at least four URL variations, but none of their content appears to have been archived to view online now. There was also a BPP website at Geocities, which included an article about the history of the BPP by Steve Keeter, but Geocities shut down all of their pages in October 2009. And a BPP message board at a since-deleted small press comics website existed in the mid-2000s, though most of the posts there have not been saved. As a result, the newsletter (when copies can be found) remains the best source for obtaining information about the group's activities (although conversations and events that occurred online were not always reflected in the printed newsletter).
In issue #9 (Nov. 2000), Keeter wrote, when comparing the new BPP and the then-current UFO, that "I think the current BPP resembles the original BPP in flavor far better than the UFO. The new BPP comes across as warmer and more fannish. It seems to recapture the actual spirit that Gaff's [i.e., original BPP founder Carl Gafford] co-op had embodied... small pressers working together to create the best and most entertaining self-published books that can be achieved. Carl himself has given his blessing to this group, and seems to accept it as the true successor to his original vision." Steve left open the possibility that "the two groups [would] ever recombine" if in the future "the UFO can streamline, simplify, and return to being the truly fannish, non-elitist, friendly and open organization that it once was."
In the mid-2000s, Steve Keeter did rejoin the UFO, as did Jim Main in 2008 and Sam Gafford in 2009. With the BPP's newsletter now a digital publication only, and facing a lack of response and involvement from the membership, the group was disbanded in May 2009 with issue #50. Jim Main told me at that time: "I feel comfortable ceasing the BPP at this point at time with UFO being the group I wish the BPP was. The UFO is a great fan-friendly group under Nic [Carcieri, then-Chairman] and hope it stays that way." In his column in BL #50, Sam Gafford (Carl's younger brother) noted that the BPP was now closed and was not to be revived by anyone else. The group's time was over, but its spirit carried on with the UFO.
